Every year, Pantone, famous for colour matching (and essentially colour in general), picks a “Colour of the Year” for the upcoming year. Past colours have included lime green for 2017, two colours for 2016; a soft pink and soft blue, burgundy for 2015, and so on. Not only are these predictions pleasing to look at in terms of aesthetics, but they are also fairly accurate, especially when it comes to fashion trends. These Colours of the Year tend to make their mark in fashion, as clothes and accessories usually reflect the chosen colour.

The colour for 2018 was revealed to be Ultra Violet, a beautiful and bold deep purple. After the announcement, Rihanna already began to embrace this new colour, posting a photo on her Instagram decked out in the deep purple shade.

Since purple is my favourite colour, this was an announcement that I was pretty excited about at first, but it got me thinking about how it would be incorporated into fashion. I’m definitely not as cool as Rihanna, so wearing purple lipstick is totally out of the question for me. Despite the fact that my whole bedroom is decked out in purple, I realized I really do not wear all that much purple.

Pantone’s Colour of the Year was definitely out of my comfort zone - and probably other people’s as well.

The Colour of the Year is usually reflected in upcoming fashion trends, and it seems as though the past colours were just so much more … wearable. But, purple is my favourite colour, and there is no way that I was going to give up on it so easily. And I won’t let the same thing happen to all of you guys, so I’m sharing my tips for how to wear Ultra Violet, 2018’s Colour of the Year!

Purple lipstick may be a bit out of my comfort zone, but there are tons of people who can rock it. You can either follow in the footsteps of Rihanna and do a head-t0-toe purple look - lipstick and all - or you can pair purple lipstick with a more conservative outfit, using the lipstick to create a statement (bold) lip. A good example of this is Lorde at the Pre-Grammy Awards brunch in 2014 (which just goes to show how long statement lips have been in fashion). Lorde pairs her bold, purple lip with a monotone black outfit, to draw emphasis to her lips and face. The rest of Lorde’s makeup is fairly conservative to further emphasize her bold lip.

Lips are not the only option for incorporating purple into your look. You can get purple tones from other makeup products, especially eyeshadow. Right now I am loving the Kylie Cosmetics Purple Palette. For those of you who don’t want to help the Kardashians profit (I have a guilty pleasure, sue me!), there are tons of different purple palettes on the market right now.

Although Ultra Violet is such a vibrant colour, there are still ways that you can wear it casually and effortlessly. With ungodly cold days, and the stress of school, I sometimes find myself very uninspired when it comes to picking an outfit. I usually stick to sweaters and jeans, which begins to become repetitive, as I find that my sweaters all belong to the same colour family (AKA white, grey, and black).

Adding an Ultra Violet sweater to your wardrobe will not only switch up your usual comfy go-to look, but will also make it look like you put in a little more effort (rather than just rolling out of bed 10 minutes before class). The vibrancy of Ultra Violet adds a pop of colour, which just makes any outfit look like there was a lot of thought put into it. In reality, all you had to do was decide if you felt like putting on denim, or just wanted to stick to your comfortable TNA leggings, but people do not need to know that 😉 . And the best part is that it’s still a sweater, so you will manage to stay warm throughout the day.

A sweater paired with jeans or leggings is perfect for anyone who does not feel confident enough to rock an extremely vibrant colour. A sweater is such a comfortable piece to wear in terms of material, so the bold colour of the look takes a backseat to the familiarity of a sweater. Despite Ultra Violet being so bold, when paired with jeans, it is more casual and easy to wear in an everyday environment, but still manages to catch the eye of others, due to the fact that it is a change from the usual dull colours of sweaters.

These are just some of the ways you can manage to wear this beautiful, vibrant colour in your everyday wear, proving how versatile this colour is. Ultra Violet would also be perfect to wear on a night out, whether it be as a dress, shirt, or a pair of statement shoes! Although intimidating at first, this bold colour is much easier to wear than first impressions make it seems, and it helps to tie together even the simplest of outfits.
